Our Christian vision, “Let your light shine”, underpins our commitment to equality, dignity and inclusion. We believe that every person in our school community is created in the image of God, is uniquely valued and is known and loved by Him. All people are equal in God’s sight and should be treated with dignity, compassion and respect.
Our school seeks to be a loving and hospitable community where everyone feels welcomed, valued and able to flourish. We celebrate the unique, God-given light in every individual and believe that each person should be able to shine and thrive, regardless of physical appearance, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, socio-economic background, academic ability, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.
Rooted in our Christian values, we are committed to promoting equality in both principle and practice. We treat all members of our school community as individuals, responding to their needs with care and understanding, and recognising the richness of God’s diverse world. We actively challenge discrimination and uphold a clear anti-bullying stance, making it explicit that racist, sexist, disablist, homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying or language is unacceptable in our school.
Equal Opportunities
The school is committed to ensuring access and inclusion for all its pupils and believes that every child deserves the opportunity to fulfil their potential. We achieve this by ensuring that our planning meets the needs of all pupils: boys and girls, children with special educational needs, children who are more able, children with disabilities and children from all social and cultural backgrounds, different ethnic groups and diverse linguistic backgrounds. Please see the document below for details of our Equality Policy.

Governors Annual Statement 2025-26
The school continues to analyse pupil performance data carefully in order to identify and address attainment gaps between groups of pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), disadvantaged pupils and pupils with English as an Additional Language.
Targeted support and intervention programmes in reading, writing and mathematics have been implemented to support pupils who require additional support. These include small group interventions and tailored classroom strategies to ensure all pupils can access the curriculum successfully.
A continued focus on high-quality adaptive teaching ensures that teaching strategies meet the needs of all learners. Monitoring through lesson observations, pupil progress meetings and work scrutiny demonstrates that inclusive teaching approaches are embedded across the school.
Governors have noted positive progress in many areas and will continue to monitor attainment data to ensure that any gaps between groups continue to reduce.
Promoting equality and respect for others is central to the ethos of William Westley. Through the curriculum, collective worship and wider school experiences, pupils are encouraged to develop an understanding of diversity and the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect.
Curriculum leaders ensure that teaching materials reflect a wide range of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives, helping pupils to develop a broader understanding of the world.
Collective Worship continues to play an important role in promoting themes such as justice, kindness, respect and inclusion, helping pupils reflect on how they can live out the school’s values in their daily lives.
Teachers also create opportunities for pupils to discuss issues relating to identity, belonging and equality in age-appropriate ways, supporting pupils to develop empathy and understanding.
The school continues to review policies and procedures to ensure they promote equality and inclusion for all pupils, staff and families.
Staff professional development has included training in areas such as adaptive teaching, SEND provision and inclusive classroom practice, ensuring staff are equipped to meet the diverse needs of learners.
The school maintains a clear anti-bullying stance, including addressing discriminatory language or behaviour swiftly and appropriately. Pupils are supported to understand the importance of respectful relationships and positive behaviour.
In addition, the school ensures that reasonable adjustments are made where necessary so that all pupils can fully participate in school life, including educational visits, clubs and enrichment opportunities.
Governors will continue to monitor progress against the Equality Objectives as part of the school’s ongoing self-evaluation and improvement planning. The school remains committed to ensuring that every member of the William Westley community is supported to thrive and to “let their light shine.”
