At William Westley

We pride ourselves on providing our children with an inspiring curriculum. The curriculum is structured to provide continuity and progression throughout year groups, key stages and the whole school. We organise the curriculum through a mixture of topic work and discrete subjects. Subjects are linked through themes where there is a connection likely to promote high quality learning but are taught discretely where it is of more benefit. Curriculum frameworks are regularly developed and refined.

The school grounds and local environment, educational visits and visitors to school contribute greatly to a curriculum relevant to the children’s experience and to learning at first hand. They are used each term to support the learning and teaching.

The wide range of extra-curricular activity provided by staff makes a positive contribution to the sense of continuity felt by pupils between the statutory curriculum and learning for life.

From September 2014, William Westley has adopted the new Primary National Curriculum in England published by the DfE in September 2013. Detail of our organisation of this curriculum can be found by following the links below. Please understand that our staff are always adapting and developing the curriculum to best match the needs of our children and therefore the plans available here are subject to change. We will endeavour to keep the links as up to date as we can. For any further information, please contact the school.

Supporting your child's progress
Learning Ladders
We have developed this set for reading, writing and maths. These are designed to help children and parents understand what each child has achieved and what next steps they need to take to progress.

Phonics
Phonics is a crucial part of children's early development in primary school, particularly in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Click on the link below to access some of the materials that were introduced at our start of year phonics workshop.

Starz
Pupils in Years 2-6 have access to our Virtual Learning Environment 'Starz'. Pupils will be taught how to make best and safe use of this online resource to support their learning at home and school, before being given a username and password. For more information please speak to your child's class teacher.
